Astronomers used data from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope to detect vapor rising from Ganymede. The findings could offer new insights about the moon’s atmosphere. Up front: Ganymede is the largest satellite in our solar system and three-quarters the size of Mars. Scientists have speculated that the vast oceans below its thick icy crust could host aquatic life. The researchers found evidence of water vapor in the moon’s atmosphere by reexamining Hubble data from the last two decades....

A team of researchers at the University of Leeds recently made the startling discovery that many observable protoplanets are surrounded by the raw molecules necessary for life. Planets such as Earth are formed when the gravitational pull of a star captures swirling clouds of dust and gas. Over time, the clouds become disks. And those disks eventually gain enough mass to become planets. The Leeds team managed to get a good look at several protoplanetary disks using incredible new wave detection methods which allowed them to detect the specific light frequency of individual molecules hundreds of light years away....

Researchers from KU Leuven, a university in Belgium, used an experimental cochlear implant to record neural signals that arise in response to sounds. These signals could be used to measure and monitor hearing quality. “In the future, it should even be possible for the hearing implant to adjust itself autonomously based on the recorded brain waves,” said study co-author Tom Francart. [Read: How to use AI to better serve your customers] Instead of making sounds louder like a conventional hearing aid, cochlear implants use electrical signals to directly stimulate the auditory nerve....

The mind-reading machine uses brain implants to track what neurons do when someone speaks. An algorithm then converts the data into a string of numbers, which another system then translates into a sequence of words. For one participant, just 3% of sentences needed to be corrected. This made the AI more accurate than professional human transcribers, whose error rates have been recorded at 5%. In particular, some sextortionists now rely on Litecoin, as major email providers automatically flag suspicious emails that feature Bitcoin wallet addresses. “As this latest twist shows, threat actors can switch to the next crypto currency [sic] and attempt to iterate through all the scam’s previous versions,” said phishing analysts Cofense. Litecoin is just sextortion flavor of the month Sextortion phishing scams have plagued inboxes for well over a year. They typically claim malware has infected recipient’s machines to record webcams and naughty browsing habits, demanding Bitcoin in exchange for not leaking that data to the world....

A century later, however, scientists are making huge strides in turning the concept into reality. The European Space Agency has realized the potential of these efforts and is now looking to fund such projects, predicting that the first industrial resource we will get from space is “beamed power.” Climate change is the greatest challenge of our time, so there’s a lot at stake. Warner Chappell, a subsidiary of Warner Music Group, has finally ended its dispute with music streaming giant Spotify after almost a year in India. Last year, just as Spotify was preparing to launch its music service in India, the Warner group took the company to the Bombay High Court over a licensing deal. Eventually, the Swedish company launched its music service without the Warner group’s music. Now, both companies have inked a new global deal that includes rights for streaming music in India....

The two institutions have committed to a total budget of €186.6 billion next year — an increase of 1.1% compared to 2022. According to the Commission, 2023’s budget aims “to boost the recovery from the coronavirus pandemic, to put Europe on the path towards a sustainable future, to protect and create jobs, and to strengthen the Union’s strategic autonomy.” Notably, a significant amount of funding is being allocated to sectors that can benefit startups and SMEs operating in the technology and sustainability industry....
